In 1992 Giulio Bertrand, a textile industrialist from Biella in Piedmont, bought Morgenster and set out to make two things to the highest standard the Cape had seen: Bordeaux-style wine and extra-virgin olive oil. He planted red Bordeaux varieties and, in time, the Italian grapes of his homeland.
To perfect the reds he called on Pierre Lurton of Château Cheval Blanc and Château d’Yquem. The morning star from the homestead’s Cape Dutch gable became the mark on every label.
Today the estate spans a Reserve Bordeaux blend, a single-vineyard red, and the Giulio Range — Italian varietals each named for an opera, a nod to the founder’s love of the form.
